Consider the occupant's age. For a room in which adults will sleep, neutral shades are popular, but don't be afraid of color. Rich reds and warm browns can create a sultry and romantic mood; gold tones can add a sense of luxury. Consider an accent wall, such as the wall behind the bed's headboard, in a bright or dark color if you feel timid about adding too much color.
The abundance of built-in cabinetry had the potential for an interesting and well-edited group of accessories but needed to be given a facelift. In order to update the 1970s DIY bookshelves, I replaced glass shelving with custom-wood shelves, built soffits to install recessed lighting and divided the large expanse of cabinetry to the right of the fireplace. Additionally, to offset all the white woodwork, the backs of the bookshelves were painted green, which also served as a colorful backdrop for accessories.
This project reinforced my mantra of process, process, process. If you can work on things in a room, you can resolve challenges. The process will lead you to all the solutions. The two very large tufted sofas now give the room a very comfortable European-chic look.
The biggest issue in their bedroom before I got my hands on it was the warmth factor. The space just felt too cold. Their previous furniture was circa 1990 and was too matchy-matchy and way too contemporary for the rest of the home. The walls were covered in a goldenrod paint color that matched the hardwood floors, and they really needed a large area rug.
