The largest issue in the space was the off-center placement of the fireplace on the back wall. In order to address this issue, furniture was arranged in a circular seating group which served as a distraction from the fireplace placement and made the room feel balanced. In addition, this arrangement took advantage of the predominately square shape of the room and encouraged conversation, whether enjoying the fireplace or the view through the window.
Since we had to work with the bones of the house, we needed to enhance the architectural details and make them feel fresh. We did it mostly with color in the paint and fabric choices.
We used the homeowners’ glass-front cabinet as a bookcase by removing the glass door and having our faux painter match the gorgeous vanity their daughter had grown up with. You would never know that the cabinet wasn't always designed or picked for the space with the beautiful antiqued white finish and gold details it now has today.
Creating a sense of intimacy in such a large room was certainly my biggest obstacle! The large area rug I placed in the room anchored the oversized seating area. Casually elegant linen draperies over roller shades on the multiple windows added dimension, texture, warmth and a sense of being enveloped by the room.
