The biggest obstacle was the large scale of the two existing tufted sofas the customer wanted to keep. I let their scale lead me to selecting other scaled pieces that would work to balance the room, including the large bergère chairs and rectangular ottoman.
Nestled into sloping topography, the design of this home allows privacy from the street while providing unique vistas throughout the house and to the surrounding hill country and downtown skyline. Layering rooms with each other as well as circulation galleries, insures seclusion while allowing stunning downtown views. The owners' goals of creating a home with a contemporary flow and finish while providing a warm setting for daily life was accomplished through mixing warm natural finishes such as stained wood with gray tones in concrete and local limestone. The home's program also hinged around using both passive and active green features.
The biggest issue in their bedroom before I got my hands on it was the warmth factor. The space just felt too cold. Their previous furniture was circa 1990 and was too matchy-matchy and way too contemporary for the rest of the home. The walls were covered in a goldenrod paint color that matched the hardwood floors, and they really needed a large area rug.
Initially, the homeowner wanted to use the same color scheme stemming from the area rug already in the room. Everything we looked at wasn't exciting since they had lived with that color scheme for so long. One day when we were talking in their kitchen I noticed a beautiful area rug in an adjacent seating area. We chose to use that in the bedroom, and the design process took off from there!
