The biggest challenges were to create balance with the strong architectural moldings in the room, make the study area in the bedroom look and function as a cohesive part of the space, and incorporate some of the existing furniture pieces into the new design.
The abundance of built-in cabinetry had the potential for an interesting and well-edited group of accessories but needed to be given a facelift. In order to update the 1970s DIY bookshelves, I replaced glass shelving with custom-wood shelves, built soffits to install recessed lighting and divided the large expanse of cabinetry to the right of the fireplace. Additionally, to offset all the white woodwork, the backs of the bookshelves were painted green, which also served as a colorful backdrop for accessories.
To make this home feel more relaxed and inviting, designer Blanche Garcia used soft colors, lightly-textured fabrics and a smart mix of delicate patterns. The beautiful result is a soothing transitional home with classic details and an overall feeling of comfort.
Match dark purple or plum with silver to create a princess look in a girl's bedroom. For a more masculine look, pair purple with brown. A rich shade of purple paired with dark wood or black furniture creates an air of sophistication and works well with contemporary or Art Deco furnishings in a teen's or adult's room. And nothing says "royal" like a room adorned in purple with gold touches.
