In designing this room for the Baltimore Symphony Decorators’ Show House, the goal was to create a warm and inviting space that would emphasize the room’s wonderfully quaint size, the elegant fireplace and the beautiful view from the window. In addition, I wanted to create a space that felt interesting and fresh yet was still true to the traditional architecture of the home. To accomplish this task, I used current, colorful fabrics to upholster furniture with traditional lines and added lighting and accessories to create the perfect balance of refined and modern.
The hidden gems in this design are the custom night stands that I had made by my carpenter. The couple loved the dresser for this space and wanted a similar but different look for the night stands. So we kept the same shape, added appliqués to the drawer fronts, and painted the pair with black lacquer. After that, we popped on fancy mother of pearl knobs!
Creating a sense of intimacy in such a large room was certainly my biggest obstacle! The large area rug I placed in the room anchored the oversized seating area. Casually elegant linen draperies over roller shades on the multiple windows added dimension, texture, warmth and a sense of being enveloped by the room.
Kids love purple, and that may have an added benefit: Some research shows that purple stimulates brain activity, which can be helpful during study time. The color can be used in a masculine or feminine decor, depending on the shade chosen and what furnishings and accent colors are also used.
